  • In 1849 the California Gold Rush begins. Initially, the gold is shipped across the Country to the Philadelphia Mint to produce coins, a long and dangerous journey.
  • In 1852 Congress approves a California branch Mint
  • In 1854 the San Francisco Mint opens to accept deposits from miners.
  • In November 1874 The Mint outgrows its original small building and moves to a larger facility at 5th and Mission Streets. The building resembles an ancient Greek temple and would become known as the Granite Lady.
  • In 1906 San Francisco is hit by an earthquake that devastates the city. The Mint building, with its solid construction, survives the earthquake and ensuing fire with only damage to its gas works, which halts coin production for a time. The Mint was the only financial institution capable of operating immediately after the disaster and became the treasury for disaster relief funds, performing other emergency banking services as well.
  • In 1937 the San Francisco Mint moves to its third and current location.
  • In 1955 the San Francisco Mint ceases coin production.
  • In 1961 the old San Francisco Mint building, called the Granite Lady, is designated a National Historic Landmark.
  • In 1962 the San Francisco facility's status is changed to an assay office.
  • In 1965 The Coinage Act of 1965 allows the San Francisco Assay Office to produce pennies.
  • In 1968 the San Francisco Mint assumes all proof coin production from the Philadelphia Mint.
  • In 1972 The old San Francisco Mint is restored. The next year, the basement and first floor open to the public as a museum.
  • In 1985 the Silver American Eagle was initially authorized by the U.S. Congress.
  • In 1986 the Silver American Eagle began its first six years of production at the San Francisco Mint.
  • In 1988 the San Francisco regains its status as a branch Mint.
  • In 2018 after 25 years the United States Mint again produced the American Eagle One Ounce Silver Proof Coins at the San Francisco Mint.
  • At LCR Coin we carry the most comprehensive inventory of American Silver Eagles.
