$20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagles (1907–1933)
The $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle, produced from 1907 through 1933, is considered one of the finest achievements in American coin design. Created by renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt, this historic Pre-1933 U.S. gold coin transformed American coinage with its classical artistry and distinctive high-relief design.
Replacing the Liberty Head Double Eagle, the Saint-Gaudens $20 gold coin marked a new era in U.S. Mint history. Today, collectors appreciate these coins for their artistic beauty, gold content, historical significance, and the variety of dates, mintmarks, and conditions available.
Theodore Roosevelt and the Birth of the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle
President Theodore Roosevelt believed American coinage should reflect the nation's artistic achievements. Inspired by the high-relief coins of ancient Greece, Roosevelt sought to replace several existing U.S. coin designs with something more beautiful and distinctly American.
In 1905, Roosevelt enlisted Augustus Saint-Gaudens, one of America's most accomplished sculptors, to redesign the nation's gold coinage. Despite difficulties with the U.S. Mint and declining health, Saint-Gaudens completed designs for both the $10 Indian Head Gold Eagle and the $20 Double Eagle.
Sadly, Saint-Gaudens died in August 1907, before his Double Eagle entered regular circulation. He never witnessed the lasting impact his designs would have on American numismatics.
The Iconic Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Design
The obverse features a full-length Lady Liberty striding forward with a torch held high in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The U.S. Capitol appears in the background, while rays of sunlight extend behind Liberty. The inscription "LIBERTY" appears above her, surrounded by stars representing the states of the Union.
The reverse depicts a majestic American eagle soaring above the rising sun, with sweeping rays extending toward the edges of the coin. The inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "TWENTY DOLLARS" appear above the eagle.
The edge carries the inscription "E PLURIBUS UNUM," separated by stars, adding another distinctive element to Saint-Gaudens' design.
1907 High Relief and Early Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles
The original 1907 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle was conceived in Ultra High Relief, closely reflecting the sculptor's artistic vision. However, the extreme depth of the design made production difficult, requiring multiple strikes and making the coins impractical for everyday commerce.
The U.S. Mint subsequently produced a modified 1907 High Relief Double Eagle featuring Roman numeral dating. These early coins remain among the most celebrated issues in the series.
Later in 1907, the Mint introduced a lower-relief version suitable for regular production. The date was changed to Arabic numerals, and the modified design continued as the foundation of the series through 1933.
No Motto and With Motto Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles
The earliest Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles, issued in 1907 and part of 1908, did not include the inscription "IN GOD WE TRUST."
President Roosevelt believed placing the name of God on circulating coinage was inappropriate, particularly because coins could be used in ordinary commercial transactions. However, public opposition and congressional action led to the restoration of the motto in 1908.
The inscription was added above the rising sun on the reverse, creating two important varieties recognized by collectors today: No Motto (1907–1908) and With Motto (1908–1933).
The Famous 1933 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle
The final year of the Saint-Gaudens series produced one of the most famous rarities in American numismatic history.
Although the Philadelphia Mint struck 445,500 Double Eagles dated 1933, the coins were never officially released into general circulation. Following President Franklin D. Roosevelt's restrictions on gold ownership and the withdrawal of gold coinage, nearly the entire mintage was melted.
A small number survived, including examples preserved by the Smithsonian Institution and others that became the subject of decades of legal disputes.
One remarkable specimen, once owned by King Farouk of Egypt, became the only 1933 Double Eagle authorized for private ownership. In June 2021, this extraordinary coin sold at Sotheby's for $18,872,250, establishing a historic auction record.
The story of the 1933 Double Eagle remains one of the most fascinating chapters in American coin collecting.
Collecting Certified $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagles
Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles remain an important category within Pre-1933 U.S. gold coin collecting. Collectors pursue these historic coins for their distinctive design, gold content, mintmarks, condition, and surviving populations.
While some dates are relatively accessible, others have become significant numismatic rarities. The 1907 High Relief, 1921, 1927-D, and several later issues are particularly notable for their historical significance and scarcity.
Professional certification by PCGS, NGC, and CAC provides independent authentication and grading, helping collectors evaluate individual examples based on their condition and recognized numismatic characteristics.
