More About This Collection

U.S. Silver Commemorative Coins

U.S. silver commemorative coins celebrate American history, national milestones, influential figures, and significant events through distinctive designs and collectible releases. From commemorative silver coins to special-edition silver medals, these issues honor the people, places, and achievements that have shaped the United States.

Modern silver commemoratives feature a variety of Proof and Uncirculated finishes, individual mintages, and artistic designs. Collectors may pursue individual issues, complete commemorative programs, or certified examples commemorating significant moments in American history.

Modern U.S. Silver Commemorative Coins

The modern U.S. commemorative coin program began in 1982 with the George Washington 250th Anniversary Half Dollar, reviving a tradition that had ended in 1954.

Notable silver commemorative programs include the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, the 1986 Statue of Liberty Centennial, and the 1987 Constitution Bicentennial. These releases helped establish the modern commemorative program and introduced new generations of collectors to coins celebrating American history.

Later programs have honored military service, national landmarks, space exploration, American institutions, and significant anniversaries. Modern commemorative silver dollars remain an important part of these programs, with designs created specifically for each occasion.

Silver Medals and Special Anniversary Releases

In addition to commemorative coins, this collection includes silver medals produced by the United States Mint, celebrating American liberty, historic coin designs, and important national anniversaries.

Notable releases include American Liberty Silver Medals, the 2024 Flowing Hair Silver Medal, and special issues commemorating America's 250th anniversary. Unlike commemorative coins, silver medals do not carry a monetary denomination and may be produced in Proof, Uncirculated, or high-relief finishes.

Collectors interested in the history and designs of individual medal programs can explore our dedicated U.S. Silver Medals collection.

Certified Proof and Uncirculated Silver Commemoratives

Modern silver commemorative coins and medals are available in a variety of finishes, including Proof and Uncirculated. Proof issues feature specially prepared surfaces that highlight the artistic details of each design, while Uncirculated releases offer a different presentation of the original artwork.

Certified examples graded PF70, PR70, or MS70 by PCGS, NGC, and CAC offer collectors independent authentication and professional grading. Depending on the issue and grading service, certain releases may also feature special designations such as First Day of Issue, Advanced Releases, or Advanced Delivery.

Collecting U.S. Silver Commemoratives

U.S. Mint silver commemoratives offer a wide range of collecting opportunities, from individual silver dollars and anniversary issues to special silver medals and coordinated collector sets.

Collectors may focus on historical themes, particular commemorative programs, limited-mintage releases, or certified examples with special labels. Original mintage, finish, condition, and historical significance can all contribute to the appeal of individual issues.
