More About This Collection

Indian Head $2.50 Gold Quarter Eagles

Explore Indian Head $2.50 Gold Quarter Eagles, struck by the United States Mint from 1908 through 1929. Designed by sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt, these distinctive Pre-1933 U.S. gold coins feature an incuse design, with the portrait and major design elements recessed below the coin's surface rather than raised above it.

Indian Head Quarter Eagles are collected by date, mintmark, and condition, with certified examples from PCGS, NGC and CAC offering collectors opportunities to acquire professionally authenticated examples of this historic American gold series.

History of the Indian Head Quarter Eagle (1908–1929)

The Indian Head Quarter Eagle emerged from President Theodore Roosevelt's effort to transform American coinage into works of art inspired by classical Greek and Roman designs.

Introduced in 1908, the new Quarter Eagle replaced the Liberty Head design that had been issued since 1840. Bela Lyon Pratt created a portrait of a Native American wearing a feathered headdress for the obverse, while the reverse depicts a standing eagle perched upon a bundle of arrows and an olive branch.

The coin's recessed, or incuse, design was a significant departure from traditional American coinage. Rather than having raised portraits and lettering, the principal design elements were sunk into the coin's surface. The same artistic approach was used for the Indian Head $5 Gold Half Eagle.

Production occurred from 1908 through 1915 and resumed from 1925 through 1929, with coins struck at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints.

Key Dates and Mintmarks

Although Indian Head Quarter Eagles are more accessible than many earlier U.S. gold series, certain dates and mintmarks are considerably scarcer.

1911-D Indian Head Quarter Eagle

The 1911-D Indian Head $2.50 Gold Quarter Eagle is the recognized key date of the series, with an original mintage of just 55,680 coins. Examples are especially desirable among collectors assembling complete date-and-mintmark sets.

Other Collectible Dates

Collectors also seek better-date issues such as the 1914, 1914-D, and 1926 Quarter Eagles, particularly in higher Mint State grades.

Condition plays an important role throughout the series, as original surfaces, attractive color, and strong detail can be difficult to find on certain dates.

Collecting Certified Indian Head Gold Quarter Eagles

Indian Head Quarter Eagles appeal to both collectors assembling complete series and those seeking a single example for a classic U.S. gold type set.

Important considerations include:

  • Certification: PCGS and NGC authentication and grading, along with CAC approval or CACG certification, can help collectors evaluate individual coins.

  • Date and Mintmark: The 1911-D is the principal key date, while several other issues become challenging in higher grades.

  • Mint State Condition: Well-preserved MS63, MS64, MS65, and higher-grade examples are often of particular interest to collectors.

  • Original Surfaces: The unusual incuse design makes surface preservation, luster, and overall eye appeal important considerations.

  • Set Building: Collectors can pursue date-and-mintmark sets, Denver Mint issues, or individual coins for Pre-1933 gold type collections.
