History of Capped Bust Gold Quarter Eagles (1808–1834)

The Capped Bust Quarter Eagle was introduced in 1808 with a design by U.S. Mint engraver John Reich. Liberty faces left wearing a cap, while the reverse features a heraldic eagle with a shield, arrows, and olive branch.

The 1808 Capped Bust Quarter Eagle was produced for only one year, with a reported mintage of just 2,710 coins. Its scarcity and distinctive design make it an important issue among collectors of early U.S. gold.

Quarter Eagle production resumed in 1821 following a lengthy interruption. The redesigned Liberty portrait, attributed to Chief Engraver Robert Scot, continued through 1827. In 1829, William Kneass introduced further modifications, including a smaller, more standardized diameter.

These early gold coins were struck in exceptionally limited quantities, and many were subsequently melted as the market value of their gold exceeded their face value.

Types of Capped Bust Gold Quarter Eagles

1808 Capped Bust – Large Cap

The 1808 Capped Bust Quarter Eagle is a one-year design type and one of the notable rarities in early American gold coinage. Its limited production and low survival rate make certified examples particularly desirable for specialized collections and U.S. gold type sets.

1821–1827 Capped Bust – Small Cap, Large Diameter

Quarter Eagle production returned in 1821 with a modified Liberty portrait and a smaller coin diameter. These issues were produced intermittently in very limited quantities and are challenging to locate in higher certified grades.

1829–1834 Capped Bust – Small Diameter

Beginning in 1829, the U.S. Mint adopted improved production methods that allowed for more consistent coin dimensions. The resulting Small Diameter Capped Bust Quarter Eagles continued through 1834, when changes to federal gold coinage standards led to the introduction of the Classic Head design.

Collecting Certified Capped Bust Gold Quarter Eagles

PCGS, NGC and CAC certified Capped Bust Quarter Eagles appeal to collectors seeking authenticated examples of early U.S. gold.

Important collecting considerations include:

  • Date and Design Type: The 1808, 1821–1827, and 1829–1834 issues represent distinct collectible types.

  • Low Mintages: Production was limited throughout the series, contributing to the scarcity of surviving examples.

  • Certified Grade: Original surface preservation and condition are especially important when evaluating early gold coins.

  • Rarity and Population: Certified population reports and historical auction records provide useful information about surviving examples.

  • Eye Appeal: Strike quality, original color, surface characteristics, and overall appearance can influence collector desirability.

Finding Rare Capped Bust Gold Quarter Eagles

Capped Bust Quarter Eagles are among the scarcer series in early American gold coinage, with limited original mintages and relatively few surviving examples. Collectors seeking these historic coins often prioritize originality, surface preservation, and certified condition.
