More About This Collection
Liberty Head $2.5 Gold Quarter Eagles
Explore certified Liberty Head $2.50 Gold Quarter Eagles for sale, featuring one of the longest-running designs in American gold coinage. Struck from 1840 through 1907, the Liberty Head Quarter Eagle, also known as the Coronet Head Quarter Eagle, remains an important series for collectors of historic Pre-1933 U.S. gold coins.
Designed by Christian Gobrecht, these classic American gold coins were produced at multiple U.S. Mint facilities and include a wide range of collectible dates, mintmarks, and rarities. Certified examples graded by PCGS, NGC and CACG, along with CAC-approved coins, offer collectors opportunities to acquire authenticated examples of this historic series.
History of the Liberty Head Gold Quarter Eagle (1840–1907)
Introduced in 1840, the Liberty Head Quarter Eagle features a left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with the word "LIBERTY." Thirteen stars surround the portrait, representing the original American colonies.
The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with a shield, holding arrows and an olive branch. The design remained largely unchanged throughout the series, making it one of the most enduring designs in U.S. gold coinage.
Each Liberty Head Quarter Eagle contains 0.12094 troy ounces of gold, with a composition of 90% gold and 10% copper.
Liberty Head Quarter Eagles were struck at the Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans, and San Francisco Mints. Collectors often seek branch-mint examples for their historical significance, limited production, and scarcity in higher certified grades.
Key Dates and Rare Liberty Head Quarter Eagles
The Liberty Head Quarter Eagle series includes several important rarities that attract collectors of early American gold.
1848 CAL. Gold Quarter Eagle
The 1848 CAL. Quarter Eagle is one of the most historically significant issues in the series. Struck using gold from California during the early Gold Rush, these coins feature the distinctive "CAL." counterstamp on the reverse.
With a reported mintage of just 1,389 coins, the 1848 CAL. Quarter Eagle is recognized as an important numismatic rarity and a tangible connection to the California Gold Rush.
1854-S Liberty Head Quarter Eagle
The 1854-S Quarter Eagle was the first Quarter Eagle struck at the San Francisco Mint. With an original mintage of only 246 coins, it ranks among the great rarities of U.S. gold coinage.
Surviving examples are exceptionally scarce, making this issue particularly significant to advanced collectors of Pre-1933 U.S. gold.
Collecting Certified Liberty Head Gold Quarter Eagles
Collectors of PCGS, NGC and CAC certified Liberty Head Quarter Eagles often evaluate several characteristics when selecting coins for their collections:
-
Date and Mintmark: Scarce branch-mint issues and key dates can command substantial premiums.
-
Certified Grade: Coins in About Uncirculated (AU) and Mint State (MS) grades are especially popular among collectors seeking well-preserved examples.
-
Originality and Eye Appeal: Natural color, original surfaces, strike quality, and remaining luster are important considerations.
-
Rarity and Population: Certified population reports help collectors assess the availability of individual dates and grades.
-
Historical Significance: Gold Rush issues and coins from historic Southern branch mints offer distinctive collecting opportunities.
Whether building a Liberty Head Quarter Eagle date-and-mintmark collection or seeking an individual example for a Pre-1933 U.S. gold type set, collectors can explore certified coins across a variety of grades and historical mint locations.
