More About This Collection
Capped Bust Half Dimes:
There was a 23-year hiatus since the Draped Bust Half Dime ended in 1805 and the first new Capped Bust Half Dime was struck in 1829. This time, the coins were designed by the Chief Engraver of the US Mint at that time, William Kneass.
This Capped Bust Miss Liberty seemed a bit older than her predecessor, wore her hair down, but covered most of it inside of a Phrygian cap. The word “LIBERTY” was emblazoned across her brow. She has the nickname of a “Capped Bust” though early collectors also called this type of coin the “Turban Head” even though it doesn’t look like a turban. She now faced left, instead of right. As usual, she was surrounded by 13 stars and had the date below her.
The reverse also was changed completely. Instead of the Heraldic Eagle design, the new American eagle had down-spread wings, a Union shield across her midsection, arrows, and olive branches below. There was a banner above her with “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on it, and the phrase “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” was above. The denomination was now expressed as “5 C.” at the bottom.
Struck between 1829 and 1837, there were numerous varieties such as Large and Small dates, and Large and Small Denominations.
