More About This Collection
About American Gold Eagles
First introduced by the United States Mint in 1986, the American Gold Eagle is one of the most recognizable modern U.S. gold coin series. Featuring Augustus Saint-Gaudens' celebrated Liberty design, originally created for the $20 Gold Double Eagle in 1907, American Gold Eagles combine historic American artistry with modern U.S. Mint production.
Struck in 22-karat gold, American Gold Eagles are issued in four sizes: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. The series includes Mint State, Proof, and special collector Uncirculated releases, offering collectors a variety of dates, finishes, and denominations.
The History and Design of American Gold Eagles
The American Gold Eagle was authorized by the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 and first released in 1986. Its obverse features Saint-Gaudens' depiction of Liberty holding a torch and olive branch, a design widely admired for its artistic detail and historical significance.
From 1986 through mid-2021, the reverse featured Miley Busiek's Family of Eagles design, depicting a male eagle carrying an olive branch above a nest containing a female eagle and eaglets.
In 2021, the U.S. Mint introduced a new reverse featuring a close-up portrait of a bald eagle designed by Jennie Norris and sculpted by Renata Gordon. This transition created two distinct varieties for 2021, commonly known as Type 1 and Type 2 American Gold Eagles, giving collectors an opportunity to pursue both designs from the same year.
American Gold Eagle Sizes and Finishes
American Gold Eagles are available in four sizes, from the fractional 1/10 oz issue to the full one-ounce coin. Each contains its stated weight in pure gold, with silver and copper added to create the durable 22-karat alloy.
The series includes bullion strikes commonly collected in Mint State grades, as well as specially produced Proof and collector Uncirculated releases. Proof Gold Eagles feature carefully prepared dies and polished surfaces, while special Uncirculated issues offer additional collecting opportunities.
Collectors may focus on individual dates, complete denomination sets, Proof issues, Type 1 and Type 2 designs, or certified examples in the highest available grades.
Certified American Gold Eagles
American Gold Eagles certified by PCGS, NGC, and CAC offer collectors independent authentication and professional grading. Available examples may include Mint State coins graded MS70 and Proof coins graded PF70 or PR70, depending on the grading service.
Beyond grade, collectors may consider mintages, release designations, certification labels, population reports, and individual dates when selecting American Gold Eagles for their collections.
