More About This Collection
Roosevelt Dimes
The Roosevelt Dime was introduced in 1946 to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt following his death in April 1945. Roosevelt had led the United States through the Great Depression and much of World War II, and his passing prompted widespread public support for commemorating his presidency.
Roosevelt was also closely associated with the March of Dimes, an organization dedicated to combating polio. Because of this connection, the dime was selected as the denomination to carry his portrait, replacing the Mercury Dime design that had been used since 1916.
History and Design of the Roosevelt Dime
United States Mint Chief Engraver John R. Sinnock designed the new dime shortly after Roosevelt's death.
The obverse features a left-facing portrait of President Roosevelt, with LIBERTY along the left side, IN GOD WE TRUST below, and the date to the right. Sinnock's initials, JS, appear near the base of Roosevelt's portrait.
The reverse depicts a torch symbolizing liberty, flanked by an olive branch representing peace and an oak branch representing strength and independence. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and ONE DIME complete the design.
The first Roosevelt Dimes were struck in January 1946 and released into circulation on January 30, Roosevelt's birthday.
Silver Roosevelt Dimes (1946–1964)
From 1946 through 1964, Roosevelt Dimes were struck in an alloy of 90% silver and 10% copper, with each coin containing approximately 0.0723 troy ounces of pure silver.
Silver Roosevelt Dimes were produced at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints during various years of the series. While many dates were struck in substantial quantities, collectors continue to seek well-preserved examples, Proof issues, and coins with exceptional strike quality.
The Coinage Act of 1965 eliminated silver from regular circulating dimes, replacing the original composition with copper-nickel clad coinage.
Collectible Roosevelt Dime Varieties
Although Roosevelt Dimes are generally more readily available than many earlier silver dime series, several dates and varieties are important to collectors.
1949-S Roosevelt Dime: A lower-mintage silver issue that remains popular with collectors assembling complete date-and-mintmark sets.
1950-S Roosevelt Dime: Another recognized date among collectors of early silver Roosevelt Dimes.
1964 Proof Roosevelt Dimes: Proof examples are collected for their quality, surface characteristics, and cameo contrast.
Full Bands (FB) and Full Torch (FT): These designations identify exceptionally well-struck details on the torch located on the reverse. The specific requirements vary by grading service.
Collecting Certified Roosevelt Dimes
Roosevelt Dimes offer collecting opportunities by date, mintmark, condition, Proof finish, and recognized varieties. Many collectors focus on the original 1946–1964 silver issues, while others pursue high-grade certified examples and coins with exceptional strike detail.
Certified Roosevelt Dimes graded by PCGS, NGC, and CACG, along with CAC-approved examples, provide professionally authenticated coins from this important twentieth-century American series.
