Its resemblance in size and appearance to the quarter dollar caused public confusion, contributing to the denomination's short life. Circulation strikes ended in 1876, while Proof examples continued through 1878.

Today, Twenty-Cent Pieces represent a fascinating and short-lived chapter in U.S. coinage, with Carson City issues and other scarce dates attracting particular collector interest.

Draped Bust Quarters (1796–1807)

The Draped Bust Quarter marked the introduction of the quarter-dollar denomination in 1796. Featuring Liberty with flowing hair and classical drapery, the design is attributed to Robert Scot and reflects the artistic style of early federal coinage.

Early examples featured the Small Eagle reverse, followed by the Heraldic Eagle design beginning in 1804. With relatively limited production and surviving populations, Draped Bust Quarters are among the most historically significant early U.S. silver coins.

Capped Bust Quarters (1815–1838)

Introduced in 1815, the Capped Bust Quarter features John Reich's portrait of Liberty wearing a cap, paired with an eagle reverse.

The series includes the larger-diameter early issues and the reduced-diameter design introduced in 1831. Collectors pursue Capped Bust Quarters for their early nineteenth-century history, die varieties, and challenging dates.

Liberty Seated Quarters (1838–1891)

The Liberty Seated Quarter, designed by Christian Gobrecht, features Liberty seated on a rock while holding a shield and staff topped with a Liberty cap.

Produced for more than five decades, the series underwent several design modifications, including the addition of arrows at the date and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on the reverse.

Liberty Seated Quarters offer collectors an extensive range of dates, mintmarks, and varieties, including scarce issues from the Carson City Mint.

Barber Quarters (1892–1916)

Designed by Charles E. Barber, Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, the Barber Quarter debuted in 1892, replacing the long-running Liberty Seated design.

The obverse depicts Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap and laurel wreath, while the reverse features a heraldic eagle.

Popular among collectors of classic American silver coinage, Barber Quarters include several important key dates, notably the 1896-S, 1901-S, and 1913-S.

Standing Liberty Quarters (1916–1930)

The Standing Liberty Quarter, designed by Hermon A. MacNeil, was introduced in 1916 during a period of artistic transformation in American coinage.

Its obverse portrays Liberty standing between two architectural openings, holding a shield and olive branch, while the reverse features an eagle in flight.

The design underwent modifications in 1917, and the date was recessed beginning in 1925 to help reduce wear. Collectors prize Standing Liberty Quarters for their artistic beauty, scarce early dates, and examples displaying a Full Head strike designation.

Washington Quarters (1932–Present)

Introduced in 1932 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of George Washington's birth, the Washington Quarter features John Flanagan's portrait of the first U.S. president.

Originally struck in 90% silver, Washington Quarters transitioned to copper-nickel clad composition for circulation in 1965. The series subsequently expanded through commemorative reverse programs honoring the states, national parks, notable American women, and other subjects.
