Who is Michael Gaudioso?
Michael Gaudioso was a Sculptor/Engraver/Medallic Artist for over ten years with the United States Mint in Philadelphia. Gaudioso joined the engraving staff in 2009, just three years after the U.S. Mint switched to digital sculpting, eliminating the need for plaster models in the development of coinage dies. Prior to joining the United States Mint’s sculpting-engraving department in 2009, Gaudioso worked as a master painter and designer for one of America’s oldest and largest stained glass studios, Willet Hauser, in Winona, Minnesota.
After 35 years the U.S. Mint changed the famous Heraldic Eagle reverse design of the American Silver Eagle sculpted and engraved by John Mercanti. Gaudioso is responsible for sculpting Emily Damstra’s new reverse design "Eagle Landing" that launched in 2021 as the 2021 T-2. The new reverse marks the first time in American Silver Eagle history that the United States Mint authorized and executed a significant design change.
