More About This Collection

History of the Morgan Dollar:

Silver Morgan Dollars are still one of the most popular U.S. coins to collect from America's history. The coin was minted by the United States Mint from 1878-1904 and then again in 1921. The Morgan Dollar was the first standard silver dollar minted. It replaced the Seated Liberty Dollar after the Coinage Act of 1873, which also ended the free coining of silver. This magnificent coin’s designer was The United States Mint Assistant Engraver named George T. Morgan.  That’s right, the coin was named after him. The famous coins Obverse depicts a profile portrait of a lady representing Liberty.  The words E. PLURIBUS UNUM above her head with the words Liberty engraved on her hat. The reverse displays an Eagle with its wings stretched out. The eagle is holding arrows and an olive branch in its talons. The reverse had an entirely different American bald eagle, facing left, holding an olive branch in her right talon and three arrows in her talon. The eagle is encircled by an olive wreath, with the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” between the eagle’s upstretched wings. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” surmounts the periphery and the denomination,” ONE DOLLAR,” is at the bottom.

Did You Know?

At one time citizens could turn in their Silver Certificates at the U.S. Treasury in return for a valuable Morgan Dollar.  The Morgan Dollars was from a bags of silver dollars from the Philadelphia Mint.  This caused huge popularity between 1962 and 1964 and millions of Morgan and Peace Dollars were sold to the general public.  The demand was so high that long lines formed outside the U.S. Treasury, some even leaving with wheelbarrows of coins. This is also when the U.S. Treasury discovered unknown mint bags of more than 2.8 million Carson City Silver Dollars. Because Carson City Silver Dollars were a lower mintage, The Treasury department decided to hold them back. Later, the coins were sorted and mounted in plastic holders. In the early 1970’s, these coins were advertised all over the U.S. Post offices, banks, TV, Posters and Brochures. All proceeds went to the U.S. Treasury.

How to Collect Morgan Dollars:

First, it is very important to always buy from a reputable trustworthy dealer. LCR Coin is not only a Trusted Dealer, but we are a Leading Authorized PCGS and NGC Dealer. We are also members of ANA and are highly respected amongst our industry. Second, you should always buy Certified Graded coins by an independent third-party Grading Service. We recommend NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation and PCGS (Professions Coin Grading Service). NGC and PCGS are the top two most respected coin grading services in the United States and all over the world. They have set an unprecedented standard of excellence in the Numismatic industry. Each coin they certify is verified authentic and its encapsulation in its holder guarantees the coins grade. PCGS has taken their grading services to a whole new level with PCGS Secure. This a is new revolutionary process that includes lasers and high-tech security. The high-tech laser scans the coin to help detect weather the coin has been artificially enhanced (cleaned) since their last certification and can also help detect counterfeits. This new certification is more likely to help recover a coin should it ever be stolen. PCGS expert graders can now designate Special coins (Superior Coins) as “Plus” within their grades. This is an important distinction when there is a big difference in the value between one population grade to the next. PCGS has also stated that the PCGS Secure Plus designation is more likely to increase the value of high-end coins.
