The History of the American Silver Eagle
The American Silver Eagle is the official silver bullion coin of the United States. It was first released on November 24, 1986. American Silver eagles are only struck in the one-troy ounce size, which has a face value of One Dollar and is guaranteed to contain one troy ounce of 99.9% pure silver. Silver American Eagle coins were minted at the following locations:
- From 1986-1992 San Francisco Mint
- From 1993-2000 Philadelphia Mint.
- From 2001 to present West Point Mint.
Adolph A. Weinman designed the obverse (the front of the coin) known as The Walking Liberty and John Mercanti designed the reverse (back of the coin) up until the beginning of 2021.
In Feb of 2021 the U.S. Mint started producing the new Type 2 Silver Eagle (Eagle Landing) which is designed by Emily Damstra and Engraved by Michael Gaudioso. These beloved Silver Eagles remain a strong investment to this day with growing popularity.
