Details emerge for U.S. Mint 2023 Morgan Peace Dollar production

2023 will be an exciting year for the Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars!

The launch of the uncirculated 100th Anniversary 2021 Morgan Peace Dollars was a huge success and remains very strong. They symbolize two important eras in the development of the United States. The Morgan Dollars represented the country’s westward expansion and industrial development in the late 19th century, while the Peace dollar reflect a nation taking its place among major world powers. Together these coins vividly illustrate important periods in our Nation’s development.

The key date among the 2021 MS70 coins being the 2021-D Morgan dollar. The U.S. Mint reported the 2021-D was most likely to have imperfections that had occurred during production. Because of this, much less made it to MS70 status leaving less MS70 graded coins than the others. This makes graded complete sets harder to complete.

Because of the success of the 2021 launch there was so much anticipation from both collectors and dealers for the U.S. mint to produce the proof version in 2022. However, in 2022 due to a shortage of silver coin planchets and the congressionally mandated bullion program for American Silver Eagles, the Mint would not have been able to produce enough silver dollars in 2022 to satisfy customer demand. The U.S. Mint instead focused on making sure it could produce enough Morgan and Peace silver dollars in 2023.

Details on mintages and which branch mint will produce the 2023 Uncirculated and Proof coins have not been revealed yet. We anticipate a strong market for these coins.

What’s different about the 2023 Proof Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars?

For the first time ever, the Morgan and Peace silver dollars in 2023 will be produced in Uncirculated and Proof versions of both designs, plus a two-coin set with one Morgan and Peace Dollar struck in Reverse Proof – the first Morgan and Peace dollars made with that finish.
